200 Portuguese M16 Wwi Or Possible British Helmet

This is na interesting helmet. It could in fact be british or portuguese. This pattern was one of the first steel helmet designs of the modenr era.
It was commercialy produced in britian early in the war and issued in limited quantities before being banned yb high command. One of the reasons was that they were made of two light a gauge of steel. Another was the fulted bowl. The initial concept of teh flutes were to deflect shrapnel. Actually it had the opposite effect. The shrapnel would hit this and if it didn't go right through it would spin the wearers head right around. They were exported to portugal who then deemed them the m16. They were put into use while fighting along side the french. This one is missing the liner but if it did have a liner it would look like a hat that was sewn right into the shell. These liners were very weak and not many examples aer left. I've never seen one. This is a very rare and interesting look into early helmet designs. This can be considered one of the very first, right up there with the french m15 and the german m16. It's in very good shape, original paint, no ruts or dents. This one has come right out of the collection. I'm also putting up some other very interesting pieces of militaria, uniforms, flags, badges and field gear. Be sure to taek a look.
